Reconditioned Equipment

New VS. Reconditioned Equipment FAQ

The battle rages on. Depending on whom you are talking to, you are either crazy to or crazy not to make use of reconditioned equipment in your store. We believe both are true depending on the product to be merchandised. Let's cover a few of the basic statements we hear.

1) Reconditioned Equipment uses too much energy!

This is one you will definitely hear from your new equipment supplier. In reality operating temperature, fan motors, heaters, and lighting determines energy consumption. All of these areas can be addressed on both sides of the reconditioned/new chart. To date, we have not seen a utility savings on a major project that would pay back the difference in cost between reconditioned and new equipment.

2) Reconditioned Equipment is old stuff painted!

Buyer beware! Some of our competition is in the practice of re-manufacturing very old equipment. Our goal is to keep our inventory current. However, it is necessary to note that most manufacturers have product lines that have been produced from the mid 80's to the mid 90's. These cases are identical and a line up of six cases from six different years could be remanufactured and bolted together and no one could tell one from the next. It should also be noted that a refrigerated case at its basic is sheet metal, insulation, fan motors, lights, heaters and a coil. All of these items are evaluated during the re-manufacturing process. Components are changed as required and some cases that do not make the cut head to the salvage yard. We are picky about what we buy. Our inventory is selective. We do not deal in junk. Ask us the age. We will be glad to tell you!

3) New laws say you cannot use reconditioned equipment!

New sanitation and product temperature standards have been published by an organization called NSF. These standards are recommendations that can be adopted by state and local authorities. Some areas have adopted these new standards and some remanufactured cases will not be acceptable. However, while we are recommending the use of new service meat, fish, deli and bakery cases, we have had no rejection of our remanufactured cases for the display of packaged, self serve items such as frozen food, dairy, lunchmeat, even packaged fresh meat and deli. Check it out with your local inspector and be sure to let them know which cases you are buying and the savings!!!! Even in areas of strict enforcement, inspectors are flexible, cooperative and understanding of the financial challenges in our industry. Over the next several years the codes will get tougher and we will make the necessary adjustments in our business and equipment to meet these challenges.

4) New equipment is prettier and the customers will like it more!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and keep in mind your customer is the beholder - not you. We are working constantly on re-cladding kits for our cases to keep up with the "modern" look. In addition, keep in mind that most customers do not have a current set of catalogs from all the manufacturers to compare what you have to what they offer. When was the last time a customer left your store because your cases were ugly?
